Abstract
After summarising the design and the constituents of refractory ceramics, the more recent developments made through the use of fine and ultra-fine powders such as oxide powders, carbon additions and special additives are presented. Examples of applications for advanced refractories are given to show the advantages in using these ultra-fine powders and the relationship between microstructure and properties. The main researches to be carried out in the future are discussed.
