Calderys Launches Odisha Plant with Game-changing Eco Focus

Calderys/FR is raising the bar for sustainable manufacturing with its new plant in Odisha, India. The CAPES facility which is a major greenfield project focused on refractories and steel casting fluxes, is designed to significantly reduce environmental impact while meeting India’s growing industrial needs.

The CAPES plant exceeds basic environmental standards by adopting a comprehensive approach to sustainability. It plans to source 20 % of its energy from solar power within five years, emphasising renewable energy. The facility is built for zero effluent discharge, recycling all wastewater on site for landscaping and other uses. Also, Calderys has introduced 95 groundwater recharge pits to protect local water supplies.

Calderys is planting a green belt covering one-third of the site, with 2000 trees planned and 800 already planted. This initiative supports biodiversity, helps offset carbon emissions, and creates a healthier microclimate around the plant. Air quality is a key focus, too, with advanced filtration systems aiming for emissions five times cleaner than typical refractory plants.

The plant also adheres to circular economy principles by utilising scrap and recycled materials in its production. This reduces waste and improves resource efficiency, supporting responsible manufacturing practices. Senior Vice President Ish Mohan Garg said, “At Calderys, sustainability is not a standalone initiative, it’s embedded into every aspect of our operations. The CAPES plant in Odisha reflects our vision of future-ready manufacturing, where innovation and responsibility go hand-in-hand.” He added that these efforts support both the planet and local communities, aligning with India’s decarbonisation goals.
