ECO-TAB® TABULAR ALUMINAS

Application Trials Reveal Impressive Results Demonstrating Strong Wear and Slag Resistance

In response to steelmakers’ growing need to reduce energy losses and CO₂ emissions during production, Almatis launched a new alumina refractory aggregate: ECO-TAB® Tabular Aluminas. Designed for use in steel ladles and other thermally cycled vessels, ECO-TAB® has attracted significant interest from the market, with application trial requests from numerous steelworks. Multiple application trials demonstrate strong wear and slag resistance, along with considerable energy savings.

Commitment for Greener Steel

Refractory linings of transport and treatment vessels such as steel ladles play a critical role in achieving sustainability targets. Almatis’ innovations enable the design of next-generation refractories to support this mission. ECO-TAB® contributes to energy savings and reduces material consumption through reduced thermal conductivity and increased heat capacity. The lower refractory weight decreases energy consumption, enabling capacity improvements in steel production, leading to CO₂ footprint reduction.

Evidence of Proven Quality

Ongoing trials at steel plants in Finland, Austria, and Germany have confirmed that ECO-TAB®’s lower-density aggregate performs as effectively as dense Tabular Alumina T60/T64 in protecting refractory linings from wear and slag attack. ECO-TAB® combines the proven benefits of high-quality Tabular Aluminas with a lower carbon footprint and reduced material consumption.

Trial Results at UNITECR 2025

At this year’s UNITECR in Cancun joint papers of Almatis with refractories and steel partners will present the detailed results of modelling ECO-TAB® usage in steel ladle lining, and the full-scale industrial trials confirming the castable suitability for application in the bottom and side wall linings of steel ladles, without compromising workability. The papers will be presented by Andus Buhr, Global Technical Director Almatis and Eeva-Liisa Pisilä, Production Manager Refractories SSAB Raahe in Finland.

For comparative laboratory analyses demonstrating that ECO-TAB® castables exhibit mechanical properties, wear resistance, and slag infiltration behavior equivalent to conventional tabular alumina-based formulations, don’t miss this presentation.
