ECREF-Seminar REFRACTORIES – Key Technology and its Applications

For the 14th time, the European Centre for Refractories (ECREF) offers their flagship seminar “REFRACTORIES – Key Technology and its Applications” on 24-26 June 2025 in Oberhausen / DE (in english language). The seminar is aimed both at experienced refractory users or employees of refractory manufacturers who want to get to know other sectors, and at beginners in the refractory industry or in the industrial sectors in which refractory products are being used. It consists of two consecutive parts, each running 1,5 days.

In the first part, the basics of raw materials, production, characteristics and installation of refractory materials and products are presented. The different classes of refractory materials and their typical representatives are discussed. Prof. Olaf Krause of Koblenz University of Applied Sciences and Dr Patrick Gehre of TU Bergakademie Freiberg will introduce the basics of the materials science of refractories. Experts working in the refractory industry will then show how this knowledge has been successfully transferred into refractory solutions. In the second part, experts from the process industry will report on the specific applications of refractory products in the most important industrial sectors, on the materials used and on the special challenges involved with the change to climate neutrality in industrial production. Applications in the cement industry, in thermal waste processing, in the glass industry, in foundries, and in iron- and steelmaking (both traditional and with direct reduction) are presented and discussed. The aim of the seminar is to create an understanding about what refractories are being used in the process industry and why.
