Gomelsteklo to Make New Energy-saving Glass Products

The second float-glass production line of Gomelsteklo was scheduled to be set into operation in March 2010. It is the first project of such kind in the glass industry of Belarus. The new manufacturing capacities will increase the production volume by 2,2 times and the percentage of export to 70 – 75 %, and create 265 jobs. Apart from that, the project will help reduce the energy consumption during the glass production process. According to preliminary calculations, the furnace fuel consumption will be half as much as it is nowadays. Gomelsteklo profits will increase more than four times over 2008 and plans to epxort new products both to the CIS and Europe. The new float glass line has a capacity of 780 t/d of glass, which will be sufficient to double float glass output by the company. The new line will produce 3 – 19 mm thick float glass. At present Belarusian producers import up to 1 Mm2/a of high quality glass.

About 50 % of the output will be exported. Additionally, about 20 Mm2/a of polished float glass annually is produced and 60 to 80 % is exported. Gomelsteklo was founded in 1933 and transformed into a joint stock company in 1997. The state is the majority shareholder with a stake of around 90 % in the company. Gomelsteklo is Belarus’ only producer of float glass, with a capacity of more than 18 Mm2/a.
