Graphite Mine at the Kropfmühl Site Officially Reopened

Graphite mining in Kropfmühl has once again become feasible due to the growing demand for graphite and the price developments on the world markets. The Supervisory Board and Management Board of Graphit Kropfmühl AG/DE decided in 2011 to make the required investments to recommence graphite extraction in Kropfmühl. During the course of a year, Graphit Kropfmühl AG processes over 25000 t of graphite. This graphite originates from the company’s own mines in Africa and Asia as well as from procurement sources worldwide. With an initial team of 10 employees, the Kropfmühl mine will extract graphite at a depth of 220 m. Around 300 t of graphite are already set to be extracted in 2012. Mining activities will then gradually be expanded. In 2013, the company plans to source approx. 1300 t of graphite from the Kropfmühl mine. Securing resources through the company’s own raw materials deposits is a central goal in the corporate strategy of Graphit Kropfmühl AG. That is why the company is increasingly working on tapping further deposits of its own for securing the supply in the long term. To this end, exploration projects are currently being carried out in countries such as Mozambique. Graphit Kropfmühl AG has been synonymous with raw materials expertise for 140 years. Extensive experience, specialist knowledge and constant research work have made the firm a trend-setting graphite refinement company internationally. Cutting-edge applications for graphite have emerged in the energy saving sector (e.g. in construction chemistry) as well as in batteries for electro-mobility. The majority of Graphit Kropfmühl AG shares are held by AMG Mining AG/DE a subsidiary of AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V./NL. Pocking-based RW silicium GmbH/DE has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Graphit Kropfmühl AG since 1998. RW silicium is the only German manufacturer of silicon-metal, which is mainly used in the chemicals and aluminium casting industries. In 2011 the company generated record revenue of EUR 118,9 million, making it the most successful financial year in the history of Graphit Kropfmühl AG (6/2012).
