October 2010 Crude Steel Production

China’s crude steel production for October 2010 was 50,3 Mt (-3,8 % compared to October 2009). Elsewhere in Asia, Japan produced 9,5 Mt of crude steel in October 2010, 8,0 % higher than October 2009, South Korea 5,2 Mt, 11,4 % up compared to the same month last year. In the EU, Germany’s crude steel production for October 2010 was 3,8 Mt, +11,0 % on October 2009. Italy produced 2,5 Mt, 11,9 % more than in 2009. Spain produced 1,4 Mt, a -12,2 % decrease compared to October 2009. Turkey produced 2,7 Mt of crude steel in October 2010, 18,6 % higher than October 2009. The USA produced 6,6 Mt of crude steel in October 2010, an increase of 9,6 % compared to October 2009. Brazil produced 2,9 Mt of crude steel in October 2010, a 4,7 % increase over the same month last year. World crude steel production in October 2010 is 18,5 % higher than in October 2008 when the impact of the global economic crisis on world crude steel production became clearer. Crude steel production for the 66 countries during the first 10 months of 2010 was 1165 Mt, 2,4 % higher than in 2008. However, crude steel production in the EU and North America during the first 10 months of 2010 was still -17,4 % and -16,8 % (respectively) less, compared to the same period in 2008 while Asia’s crude steel production was 14,7 % higher. The crude steel capacity utilisation ratio of the 66 countries in October 2010 continued to rebound to 75,4 % from 74, 8% in September 2010. Compared to October 2009, the utilisation ratio in October 2010 decreased by 2,7 %. (11/2010)
