Retrofitted No. 4 Furnace of Pohang Steelworks Ignited

The No. 4 Furnace at Pohang Steelworks, which underwent 3 months of improvements since July, is now the largest furnace in Korea. For 16 years after starting its operations on July 19, 1994, the No. 4 Furnace at Pohang has produced 50,77 Mt of molten iron. During this period, productivity rates (i.e. molten iron production amount by inner volume) were at over 2,6, which is a world record figure. Also, POSCO already had experience successfully building a system for producing over 5 Mt/a from their gigantic No. 4 Furnace at the Gwangyang Steelworks. POSCO plans to reach the largest production rate in the world with high productivity technologies, and make the furnace into the world`s most competitive furnace by attaining low reducing agent rate and high pulverized coal injection technologies that minimize greenhouse gas production and by increasing the usage of low-cost fuel and materials.
