SGL Group: Official Inauguration of the Carbon and Graphite Hub in Malaysia

With an annual capacity of 60000 t graphite electrodes and cathodes, this state-of-the art facility will serve as SGL Group’s Asian graphite electrode and cathode hub. The investment volume is over EUR 200 million. Robert Koehler, CEO SGL Group: “As the gateway to the Asian growth markets, the Malaysian plant will serve as our hub for graphite electrodes and cathodes. With its investment volume is Banting the largest single project in our company‘s 20-year history and therefore a clear commitment to Malaysia as an economic and production base.”  The decision to build the facility in Banting was based primarily on Malaysia’s strategic location for supplying the electric steel and aluminum industries in the (Southeast) Asian and Middle-East markets. Banting is an attractive investment environment with low energy costs, modern infrastructures and offers a skilled, educated and qualified workforce. The technical capability to produce both electrodes and cathodes (“swing capacity”) will allow flexible operations to adjust production to market needs. This state-of-the-art facility defines a new benchmark in cost efficiency and quality for the graphite industry. Germany and Malaysia have extensive economic relations. In 2011, trade was worth EUR 10.2 billion and currently Germany ranks 10th among Malaysia’s trading partners. (12/2012)
