SGL Group Organizes Idea Contest for New Composite Material CARBOCRETE

Contestants will be asked: “What would you make out of carbon concrete?” The objective is to seek new applications and product ideas for this very lightweight but exceptionally strong material.  Carbon concrete can be fabricated into unusually fine structures and is already being used to produce designer seating. Carbon concrete has exciting potential for use in the construction industry, both for re-pairing and strengthening bridges, tunnels, and old buildings as well in new buildings. In these applications, the carbon fibre/concrete composite registered under the brand name CARBOCRETE is being used as an alternative to steel-reinforced concrete be-cause it is 75 % lighter, has a longer service life and is corrosion resistant. SGL Group is currently collaborating with partners on projects in which carbon fibre concrete, in addition to CFRP strips, is already being used.  The concrete is reinforced with carbon fibers in a range of forms, including multiaxial and woven fabrics, specially developed grids and chopped fibres. These projects highlight just a few of the many applications and design possibilities of carbon concrete. The competition will run from 11 January to 22 February 2012. At this time, the best ideas will be selected by a jury of experts and awarded prize money totaling EUR 15000. The main prize winners will have the opportunity to present their ideas in a public forum at a special SGL Group symposium that will be held in April 2012 (12/2011).
