Seminar: Refractories – Theory and Application

The speakers: Prof. A. Eschner, Prof. J. Pötschke, Dipl.-Ing. R. Krebs and Dipl.-Ing. J. Mendheim could welcome 19 participants of different industrial branches in Aachen. They came mainly from the steel and foundry industries, the cement industry, chemical industry and some other high temperature processing industries. The speakers gave basic lectures titled “Refractories and their application”, “Wear and corrosion of refractories: particular examples”, “Unshaped refractories: testing and application” and “Refractory engineering in construction and application of industrial furnaces” including a fundamental discussion. A questionnaire could be given to the speakers by the participants before the seminar. According to the participants´ wishes the questions were discussed confidentially or within the auditorium. A visit of the analytical and testing laboratories of the Institute of Mineral Engineering and a dinner in a historical site of Aachen gave a nice framework for the technical programme. Due to the positive feedback on this seminar the organizers are planning a second seminar in autumn 2011.
